Moving out doesn’t remove someone from a lease. Learn how to confirm each renter’s legal status, request the right paperwork from the landlord, settle shared expenses, and get a signed release that protects everyone’s rental history.

Lower your apartment's heating bill this winter by starting with a thermostat schedule and no-cost draft fixes. Learn which changes require your landlord's permission, what a space heater costs to run, and where to get help if you can't pay your bill.

A rent-payment fee may be allowed when tenants voluntarily choose a paid method, but the property's location, lease, housing program, card-network rules, disclosures, and availability of a practical fee-free option all affect whether you can charge it.

Finding a rental that accepts your dog or cat matters more than counting dog parks on a map. This ranking weighs housing availability and cost first, then considers outdoor access, vet options, and routines that make pet ownership workable after you sign the lease.

An equal split works until someone realizes they're paying the same amount for less space, worse bathroom access, or a room shared with a partner. Fairness starts with agreeing on what you're measuring, not arguing over the final numbers.

The rent listed is only the starting number. Timing and required add-ons can make an apartment cost more than the listing suggests. Move-in payments and recurring bills may compete for the same limited cash.

When your roommate stops paying their share but stays in the home, your first job is to protect the full rent payment and understand what the lease actually requires. Document the shortfall, propose a single deadline, and avoid lockouts or threats that could create new legal problems.
